The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen,  has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, describing the tragedy as painful, unfortunate, and avoidable.

?In an official press release issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Abbas extended his heartfelt condolences to the Niger State Government and the bereaved families.

?Aligning with the directives issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Speaker Abbas called for a thorough, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event. He emphasized that maintaining public trust requires full accountability, stressing that justice must not only be served but must be clearly seen to be done.

?The Speaker noted that the findings from the ongoing investigations should yield long-lasting institutional solutions, particularly regarding suspect welfare, human rights compliance, operational protocols, and the persistent challenge of overcrowding in custody facilities.

?Furthermore, Speaker Abbas commended Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago for his prompt management of public unrest and for preventing a breakdown of law and order during protests. He also commended the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for their rapid operational response.

?Speaker Abbas concluded by offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and comfort for the grieving families.
