?The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja announced a renewed commitment between Nigeria and China to deepen bilateral cooperation across trade, technology, and sustainable development.

During a diplomatic meeting on September 21, 2026, Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, met with a Chinese delegation led by H.E. Ambassador Liu Jieyi, Vice Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Building on established collaboration in infrastructure, mining, defense, and trade, both parties identified emerging sectors for immediate joint action, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and digital technology.

?Economic transformation stood at the center of the discussions, with Ambassador Dunoma urging Chinese enterprises to invest directly in Nigeria’s special economic zones.

He emphasized the Federal Government’s goal to transition away from raw material exports toward local manufacturing and value addition, a shift designed to generate domestic jobs and position Nigeria as a primary commercial gateway to the wider African continent.

In response, Ambassador Liu highlighted the importance of existing frameworks like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the China-Nigeria consultative mechanism to ensure policy alignment and rapid implementation.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through clear action plans, institutional collaboration, and shared efforts to promote regional peace and multilateral stability.
